In time, it grew to be a massive conglomerate of businesses that was eventually targeted by an anti-trust suit. Subsequently, LTV merged with Jones&amp;Laughlin and the defunct Republic Steel. This new, massive firm was renamed LTV Steel. The company became the third largest steel firm in America; however, gross mismanagement and nimble foreign competition brought down the steel giant. I was born in Youngstown the day before “Black Monday”, which was the announcement of the closure of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Works in nearby Campbell. This cataclysmic event marked the beginning of the end for the steel industry in Youngstown.
